Franco began acting in the late 1990's and earned a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television, for his role in James Dean (2001). He was cast as Harry Osborn in Spider-Man (2002) and he starred in Great Raid in 2005. Three movies, with starring roles, followed in 2006: Tristan & Isolde, Annapolis, and Flyboys. In 2008, he starred in Pineapple Express, and played a prominent role in Milk. Based on these roles it appears that he tends to play characters with a troubled past or life.
